How to disable the headphone jack on your computer

If you wish disable the headphone jack on the computer, take just a few minutes of your time and read the steps I have described below, so as to find out those necessary to perform this operation on PCs with Windows installed and on Apple computers (MacBook and iMac). As for Windows, the guide is based on the latest operating system released by Microsoft (Windows 10), but the steps can be easily replicated on all versions still supported (Windows 8.1 e Windows 7).

    Windows

    How to disable headphone jack

If you have a Windows-equipped PC, you can turn off the headphone jack in the following way: open the menu Home (clicking sull'icona a forma di pennant located in the lower left corner of the screen), type the word Audio in the search field (you can perform the same operation using Cortana, where available) and click on the item Audio belonging to the Control Panel (and not the System Settings menu, found in Windows 10).

Once in the next screen, right click on an empty spot in the field on the Playback tab and select the item Show disconnected devices, so as to show the headphone jack output, even if not used. Once this is done, it identifies, among the items marked by an icon with a red arrow pointing downwards, the called output Headphones related to the sound card installed in your computer (eg. High Definition Audio or Realtek HD Audio) and right-click on it, then select the item Disable.

If everything went well, you should see "Headphones" disappear among the disconnected devices, a sign that the operation was successful and that, from now on, the headphone jack output will no longer work even if a cable is inserted into it.

If you wish, you can retrace your steps at any time. How? I'll explain it to you right away: go once again to the section Audio of Control Panel, right click on an empty spot in the field on the tab Playback, select the item this time Show disabled devices, so that all disabled devices appear on the screen (recognizable because they have a black arrow pointing downwards as an additional icon). Once this is done, identify the exit Headphones that you had previously disabled, right click on it and select the item Enable.

    MacOS

    How to disable headphone jack

If you own a Mac, you can disable the audio jack in a very simple way: open the Launchpad (clicking sull'icona a forma di rocket attached to the Dock bar) and type the word Midi in the search field, at the top, and then click on the icon Audio MIDI Setup when this is shown on the screen. Now, identify the output with a headphone icon (it should be called Integrated output, so as not to confuse it with Bluetooth headphones) in the new window that opens on the screen, click on it and move the attention to the volume control bars that appear subsequently on the opposite side of the configuration panel.

At this point, you can disable the audio from the Mac headphone jack by placing a check mark in the box under the column Turn off Audio, corresponding to the item Master. If all went well, the headphone jack will be disabled and no sound will be reproduced through this output, even if you insert a cable into it.

To re-enable audio from the headphone jack, simply reopen the app Audio MIDI Setup, identify the headphone output again and remove the check mark from the box under the column Turn off Audio, so as to rehabilitate the canal Master.

How to disable headphone jack on Android

    How to disable headphone jack

You did not find the advice I have given you so far useful, since the audio jack that makes the "tantrums" (due to the liquid or dust penetrated inside it) belongs to a terminal Android? Does your smartphone now detect connected headphones even when they are absent?

This is the most suitable section for you: I tell you right away that it may be necessary to deactivate the headphone jack, so that you can return to using the phone correctly, thus restoring the calls and sounds emitted by the internal speaker. In this regard, I intend to show you the right apps to do this quickly and easily, without the need to unlock the root permissions.

Wait a minute, don't you have a clue what root permissions are? Even if they are not required by this guide, you can learn more about the subject for future needs: so I invite you to read my guide on how to root Android.

    Audio Router

    How to disable headphone jack

The first app I recommend you to try is Audio Router, available for free in the Google Play Store: within a couple of taps, this app allows you to "bypass" the emission of sounds through the headphones of your smartphone (or tablet), playing the audio always and in any case from the internal speaker .

To proceed, download and install the app from Google Play and, once launched, Allow all the permissions necessary for the proper functioning of the same, also proceeding to unlock thescreen overlay, if necessary: tap on the item Open Settingsselect the app Audio Router and enable the toggle for moving on other apps.

Once the necessary permissions have been fixed, click on the tab Hardware located on the bottom bar of the app, then tap on the item Audio Jack and, from the new panel that opens, press the button OFF to “turn off” the headphone jack. Then press the button next to the item Always On to disable the headphone jack even if the phone is restarted and confirm all the changes made by touching the item Apply: in this way, the sound output from the headphone jack will be disabled and the output can no longer be used, even by inserting real headphones.

To reactivate the headphone jack after using this app, simply open it again, press on the voice Audio Jack and select Default to restore the classic behavior on Android (the headphone jack will be enabled only if the plug is inserted). Once this is done, remove the resident check mark next to the item Always On (if present) and confirm the changes by tapping on the item Apply.

Note: Do not uninstall the app without first putting the changes back in place, you may find it difficult to reuse the headphone jack correctly.

    mSwitch

    How to disable headphone jack

Another app you can use on Android to disable a stuck headphone jack, is mSwitch, downloadable for free from the Google Play Store: this app was created with the aim of transforming the headphone jack into an additional control button (using special hardware "keys" to be inserted in the jack instead of the headphones), but it is also excellent for disabling the headphone jack for sound reproduction, so as not to show itself to the system anymore and interfere with its normal use.

After installing this app on your device, open it and accept its terms of use by tapping on the items I Agree and subsequently on Continue, then tap the button Get Started present at the bottom of the welcome window. At this point, various screens should appear relating to the permissions necessary for the app to work: tap the button several times Allow to grant such permissions (including the step about screen overlay, which I already told you about in the previous section).

At some point, you may see a window pop up asking you to enter a email address for registration: if you do not intend to use it, tap on the item Skip placed at the top. Once in the main screen of the app, then swipe from left to right to bring up the menu of the same, then tap the item Settings.

In order for the app to properly disable the headphone jack for managing audio, make sure that next to the items KeyCut service, Initialize on startup, Notification e Visible in the status bar check marks are present, so as to have the app service always running as soon as the smartphone is turned on, also bypassing any energy saving systems integrated into the device, and that's it!

To restore the correct functioning of the headphone jack, all you have to do is uninstall the app: the device will automatically return to the starting conditions and will once again be able to route the audio through the integrated jack as needed.
