Windows DVD player
The first software I want to recommend you for see DVD on Windows 10 è Windows DVD player, specially designed for the purpose and available with free trial on the Microsoft Store. In fact, this program adds to Windows 10 the components necessary for DVD playback, thus allowing you to view movies and videos directly from the optical media.
As I mentioned earlier, before purchasing the program (which costs 14.99 €), you can take advantage of the free trial to see if it is compatible with your device (this version does not allow playback of the movie): to get it, first start the Microsoft Store clicking onicon located in the system tray (a bag with the Windows logo), or found inside the Start menu or of Start Screen (which you can reach by selecting the flag icon located at the bottom left of the screen).
Once the Store has started, type in the words DVD player in the text box located at the top, click on magnifying glass and then the icon relating to the program Windows DVD player (the blue icon with a “desktop” DVD player in the center). At this point, press the button Race, if necessary enter the credentials of your Microsoft account (if you do not have one, I invite you to consult my tutorial on how to create a Microsoft account), presses the button three times Log in and wait for the installation to complete.
Once the installation is complete, insert the DVD into your drive, click on the notification CD Drive (X :) [Title] Select to choose the operation for DVD movies that appears at the bottom right and, from the panel that is proposed, click on the item Play DVD - DVD player. Then wait for the compatibility check to be completed and, if successful, proceed to purchase the program following the procedure suggested on the screen.
Once the purchase is complete, you can remove and reinsert the DVD in your player and start playback as suggested above or, with the disk inserted, start the app from the menu Start/Start Screen and click the ▶ ︎ button located at the bottom to start the movie.
Although the Windows 10 DVD player is a good program and offers compatibility with most computer DVD players, I realize that spending 15 euros to buy it could make you turn up your nose: in this case, I recommend that you take advantage of one of the alternative solutions proposed below.
VLC Media Player
If I had never heard of it, VLC Media Player is one of the best programs ever for see DVD on Windows 10 (and more): light, open source but above all free, this software offers a complete video playback platform and does not require additional codecs, as it includes everything you need to play most of the video formats available.
To download VLC on your computer, first connect to its official website, press the orange button Download VLC, wait for the setup file (vlc-xx.xx.xx-win32.exe) is downloaded, then start it with a double click. To complete the installation, press the button Yes, select the voice cityno from the drop-down menu proposed and first click on the button OK, then 3 times on the button NEXT on your pulse Install. So uncheck the box Run VLC media player and then presses the button end.
Once the program installation is complete, insert the DVD into your computer's drive, click on the notification that appears at the bottom right (Select to choose the operation for DVD movies) and, from the proposed panel, click on the icon relating to VLC (Play DVD Video - VideoLAN VLC Media Player). Press the button if necessary Continue and, using the mouse, start playing your movie or select the chapter or scene of interest from the proposed menu, if present.
Does Windows 10 not offer any notification when you insert the disk into your drive? Don't worry, you can start playing your movie by doing the following: Once the DVD is inserted into your computer, start VLC from the menu Start/Start Screen or from the desktop icon (in the shape of traffic cone), click on the menu Media located at the top left, select the item Open Disc ..., check the box DVD, select your DVD player from the drop-down menu Device to disk and finally click on the button Play, located at the bottom right.
If you think it is more convenient, I would like to point out that VLC is also available as an app on the Microsoft Store: you can download it by opening the digital showcase of the Redmond giant, searching for it inside the latter and pressing the installation button. Easier done than said!
MPC-HC
MPC-HC, also known as Media Player Classic Home Cinema, it may seem like the "copy" of the old Windows Media Player present on Windows 95 and 98, but I can guarantee you that it is not! It is, in fact, a complete program for the use of DVD content on Windows 10 (or, if you want, also on other versions of Windows), complete with support for chapters, subtitles and much more.
To download this interesting software, first connect to its website, click on the button MPC-HC – Download Now! and wait for the installer (MPC-HC.xyzx64.exe) is downloaded to your computer. At this point, start the setup file, click on the button Yes, choose the item cityno from the drop-down menu proposed, then click on the button OK and finish the setup by first pressing the button NEXT five consecutive times and then on Install e end.
Once the installation process is complete, start MPC-HC by clicking on its "clapperboard" icon located on the desktop or in the Start menu / Start Screen (which you can open by clicking on the flag-shaped button located in the lower left corner of the screen), press the button Yes to activate automatic updates (you need to do this only at the first run of the program), click on the menu Fillet, select the voice Open disk and, from the new menu proposed, select your DVD player (you will see the title of the film on the screen, accompanied by the drive letter - eg. D: - of your reader).
If there is a menu on your DVD, the first few seconds of playback may have some imperfections: don't worry, it's perfectly normal, you just have to wait until the menu is completely and correctly displayed, which will be clickable using the mouse.
mPV
You know those small, light, low-frills programs that do their job and do it well too? Perfect, mPV is exactly something like this: although it has a minimal interface, this multimedia player is an excellent solution for see DVD on Windows 10, thanks to the excellent internal engine optimized for "on the fly" decoding, which guarantees excellent fluidity during playback.
To install mpv, first connect to the website dedicated to the Windows version of the program, click on the link 32-bit o 64-bit (depending on your operating system) on the most recent date and extract the .7z files just downloaded to a folder on your desktop for quick access (if you don't know how to do it, I invite you to consult my guide on how to extract 7z files).
To start playing the DVD, insert the disk into your player, enter the folder created above and double click on the file mPV (the one identified by an icon representing the “Play” symbol). Once this is done, all you have to do is drag the main video file onto the program screen: double-click the icon What PC located on the desktop, right click on the icon for yours DVD player (eg CD Drive (D :) [Movie Title]), select the item apri from the contextual menu proposed, "grab" the folder with the mouse VIDEO_TS, “Drag it” into the screen of mPV, scroll with the mouse on the program screen and press the button Play located at the bottom left of the bar that appears, to start playback.
In this case, all the "scenes" of the DVD will be "projected" in sequence: unfortunately mpv is not compatible with the navigation menus, consequently the playback of the movie can only follow thetemporal order set by whoever created the DVD.
In other words, the scenes of the film are played in the right sequence, however there is no possibility of accessing an "on-screen" navigation menu: you can still jump forward or backward from scene to scene by moving the mouse within the program screen and selecting buttons ◀ (previous scene) or ▶ (next scene).
Other programs to watch DVD on Windows 10
If you have come this far, you have certainly had the opportunity to evaluate the programs for watching DVD on Windows 10 that I have proposed so far, however you have not been able to find something that fully satisfies you. How do you say? Although you have installed the suitable program, still can't play DVD on Windows 10? Then I recommend, to exclude physical damage, to try the disk on another compatible device: if the playback is successful, insert a second disk in the reader connected to Windows 10, to verify that it is not damaged.
